Nitro (White River Marine Group / Bass Pro) Nitro Z21 XL

★★★★4.0 / 5

A fast, dry-riding, well-packaged tournament bass boat at a competitive price, dragged down only by a real and repeated pattern of electrical and warranty-service complaints.

Best for: Serious and tournament bass anglers who want a 70-mph big-water rig with deep storage and a turnkey Mercury/trailer package, and who have a trusted dealer for warranty support.

The good

  • Genuinely fast and stable: independent test hit just over 70 mph at 6,000 rpm with a 23-pitch prop and clipped foot-high wind chop at 65 mph without losing stability
  • Dry, composed ride from the 18-degree multi-strake pad vee hull, with responsive SeaStar hydraulic steering
  • Strong value as a complete package: base price includes the Mercury 250 Pro XS and a trailer, and reviewers called it hard to ignore on price-for-performance
  • Fishing-focused layout with deep rod lockers, generous tackle storage, day boxes, recessed foot pedals and a dual-console conversion option

The bad

  • Recurring electrical gremlins: multiple owners report bow/console/bilge bus-network faults affecting lights, pumps, trim and fan, with at least one 2019 Z21 Pro owner unable to get it fixed under warranty after a year
  • Quality-control misses: owners report dead bow trim/light switches from new and LED lights needing replacement out of the box
  • A 2020 Z21 Pro owner reported a major transom crack and separation that the warranty department denied
  • Repeated complaints about White River Marine warranty/customer service and poor-quality factory trailers across forums and PissedConsumer
The honest take

On the water the Z21 XL earns its reputation: it's fast, dry, stable in chop, and one of the best value-per-foot tournament rigs you can buy turnkey with a Mercury and trailer. The problem isn't the hull design, it's consistency after the sale. The same electrical-bus issues, dead switches, and warranty-denial stories keep surfacing across model years on owner forums, so your experience hinges heavily on getting a clean unit and a dealer who'll fight for you. Buy it for the performance and value, but inspect the electrical system hard and budget for the possibility of warranty friction.

The Pact

We'll always be honest about gear. The good and the bad.

Most reviews you read only tell you what's great about a product. Ours tell you what's wrong with it too — where it fails, who shouldn't buy it, and when the cheaper option is the smarter one.

Every verdict comes from actually fishing the gear, not reading a spec sheet. When we get it wrong, the correction runs as loud as the original take.
