Morgan Out Island 41

★★★★4.0 / 5

The cheapest boat in the article has the newest engine, the most tankage, and a solar arch. The catch is it barely sails in light air.

Best for: The tall sailor on a tight budget who would rather motor-sail a big comfortable boat than race a small one.

The good

  • New Beta 60 hp, new main, lithium house bank, solar arch with davits, hardtop dodger, new cold plate, two heads.
  • 138 gal fuel and 170 gal water: more than any other boat here by a wide margin.
  • Comfort 35, CSF 1.85, shallow 4.2 ft draft; the Out Island has been to every anchorage on earth.

The bad

  • SA/D of 12 means it will not sail in light air; this is a motorsailer in practice.
  • Ballast ratio is a low 33%; it heels and then stops, but it is not a stiff boat.
  • No published headroom figure; owners quote 6'4" to 6'5". Measure it. A 1976 hull at this price needs a full survey.
The honest take

An estate sale of a boat someone spent real money on. Twenty-seven thousand pounds is a lot of boat for one person, but the arch, davits, furler, and electric windlass are exactly the solo kit, and the Out Island is docile. Go stand in the cabin, then get a surveyor.

The Pact

We'll always be honest about gear. The good and the bad.

Most reviews you read only tell you what's great about a product. Ours tell you what's wrong with it too — where it fails, who shouldn't buy it, and when the cheaper option is the smarter one.

Every verdict comes from actually fishing the gear, not reading a spec sheet. When we get it wrong, the correction runs as loud as the original take.
