Catalina Catalina 38

★★★⯨3.5 / 5

Not a Catalina 36: a Sparkman & Stephens IOR hull Catalina bought the molds for, with a long Transpac history.

Capacity
20 gal fuel / 55 gal water · headroom 6'3"

Universal diesel or Atomic 4 (check hull)

Best for: The sailor under 6'3" who wants Islander 36 behavior in a 38-foot S&S hull.

The good

  • S&S design, 365 built, Transpac and Mexico record; D/L 256, CSF 1.89, SA/D 16.3.
  • 6'3" headroom across sources; big cockpit, easy deck.
  • Two examples listed in San Diego the same day, so there is choice.

The bad

  • 20 gal of fuel and 55 of water: a jerry-can boat for a solo crossing.
  • Spade rudder and a deep 6.8 ft keel.
  • Early hulls carried an Atomic 4 gasoline engine; find out which this is.
The honest take

Same logic as the Islander 36, on a slightly bigger S&S hull. Light, quick, manageable, and thin on tankage. A good boat for a fast crossing with a careful water plan.

The Pact

We'll always be honest about gear. The good and the bad.

Most reviews you read only tell you what's great about a product. Ours tell you what's wrong with it too — where it fails, who shouldn't buy it, and when the cheaper option is the smarter one.

Every verdict comes from actually fishing the gear, not reading a spec sheet. When we get it wrong, the correction runs as loud as the original take.

The good and the badWe tell you what's wrong with a product, not just what's right.
